The cost of construction in Mauritius has taken another hit, as the price of a 25kg bag of cement has increased by 5%, now retailing between MUR 178 and MUR 188, depending on the region. This price hike is part of a nationwide adjustment aimed at maintaining supply stability in the local market.
Port Louis: Cement prices have gone up from MUR 169.80 to MUR 178.
Savanne: The price has surged from MUR 179 to MUR 188.
This adjustment comes in response to pressure from major suppliers who have been demanding further increases and warning of potential mass layoffs. In an effort to avoid a shortage of this essential construction material, Minister of Commerce Michael Sik Yuen defended the increase, highlighting the delicate balance between affordability and availability.
Since the 2003 amendment of the Consumer Protection Regulations, the Ministry of Commerce has been responsible for setting cement prices in Mauritius. The latest revision aims to ensure continued access to cement across all regions while addressing industry challenges.
For contractors, homebuilders, and developers, this price increase affects project budgets and material planning. The need for accurate cost estimations and transparent communication with clients is now more crucial than ever.
